Minutes from the 10/10/06 meeting

Attendees: Michele Bonn, Alan Wallace, Jean Preston, David Steege, Jim Igleheart, Leonard Schulze, Rick Matthews, Mark Snavely, and Barb Short

There was a crash to the database computer system last week. Wake up call. Committee needs to insist that frequent backup exists.

Proposal form: Mark
• Deadline for schedules for 2007-08 comes up quickly that effects submission for proposals.
• Trial letters to dept. chairs.
• Most classes are eligible: Heritage is already part of the WAC.
• Upload one class at a time.

• Screen size is an issue: make the screen as large as possible.
• So far Pam Smiley, Aaron Trautwein, and Mark have submitted electronic forms.

Letter for attendance at workshop: David
• Going to faculty to verify WI courses: purpose is to read and understand requirements
• The committee edited language of the letter.

• Questions about how this works for SPS in the Fall night program

Stipends paid to workshop attendees from Aug. 2006 workshop in our paychecks Sept. 22.

Outreach: Rick
1. Modern Language Inquiry: Rick met with Mimi
• Question: did the writing have to be in English?
• Rick answered no: process is important

• Senior thesis is in English: regular requirements
• Calligraphy: Does a calligraphy project have intent in meaning? Are they writing in their language to express meaning? If they are copying letters to learn the art form only, then it doesn’t meet the WAC requirement.
• Ask about calligraphy in their own translation: English text first then written and translated
• Font size brings up issues that we hadn’t considered for meeting criteria.
• Graphic design and Topography: Leonard brings up questions

• Purpose: Jim: it is writing in the English language or writing in the discipline?
• David clarification: requirements of the discipline is the target.
• Mark example: in math, formulas, function, graphs information are included in papers.
• Process and gathering feedback is important: Rick. Instructor to be creative to meet some course objectives
• Confusion of WAC as a philosophy: not just in language but informal writing use: Alan: expressive and analytic.
• Leonard: key is how course is intentionally designed

• Rick to draft response to modern languages and give to Mark before responding to Mimi.
2. Music Dept. Inquiry:
• Asking about using freshman classes 116 and 117 for Majors
• Issues: not committed majors and 2 cr. transfer students
• Music history is a typical course for WI courses in other colleges according to Alan: those would be courses 305, 306, 307. Dimitri teaches these.
• Jim Ripley has objection to big classes in music history being used.

• David reminded us that General education classes are also used so music majors can use the wildcard option for the 4th class.

Michele: calendar and timing
• We have to move quickly to enter these classes maybe by Oct. 31. First part of November dept. chairs will be submit 2006-2007 schedules to Division chairs who will return them by Thanksgiving to the registrar.

Carthage Symposium: we need to coordinate with Tim Eckert

We will approve both sets of minutes in the next meeting, Oct. 24, 10:30am.

Issues for the next meeting:

• Oct. 31 proposals
• Rest of agenda from this meeting: Heritage clusters and mentoring, Dept., Future recognition, Assessment, Baseline writing, Timing, Student survey, Faculty survey
• Dept. need a reminder
• Majors
• Bean book on order
• Chris Grugel: WAC WI access site.

Respectfully submitted,
Barbara J. Short

Minutes of the 9/26/06 Meeting

In attendance were: Rick Matthews, Barbara Short, Michelle Bonn, David Steege, Mark Snavely, Leondard Schulze, and Alan Wallace.

1. Next meeting is Oct. 10 at 10:30am.
2. Letter to go to the dept. chairs after the workshop as follow-up.
3. Mark: emailed Dave Robinson about the proposal:
• There are formatting issues with the electronic form. It doesn’t accept a syllabus. Courses descriptions are there and the WI component.

• Should be ready in a week and department chairs will get a letter when it is up and running. The responsibility for WI classes (other than Heritage) is up to the depts. Plan should be filed from the depts. to the WAC committee by mid November. Also helps with staffing needs.
• Department chair approval is needed for each class submitted.
• Should be easy to use: Simply fill out the form and hit submit; data is collected in a database. Carthage faculty standard login is used.
• Backup for the data is 1 week to 4 months: the executive committee should be asked about this issue.
4. Certificates will be sent to attendees who completed the training sessions Aug.28-31, 2006.
• 66 people attended in all: 61 came to all of the sessions including 30 dept. chairs.

• Heritage attendance 70 Heritage instructors and 50 came to the workshop. 17 Heritage instructors didn’t take the training that should have completed the process. 8 people who didn’t have to have the sessions took them.
• What do we do with the faculty who should have taken the sessions? It’s a hard position to be in since they are full time faculty. Heritage classes are all listed as WI. The list of absentee faculty was reviewed and letters will be sent, possibly in two versions (those who notified about being absent and those who did not). Letter includes filling out the form of what they are going to do in their classes for Heritage in the spring that makes the class writing intensive which is a realistic expectation. The letter going out to faculty will include the WAC criteria.
• Mark, David, and Alan will draft the letter and submit it to the database. Respond to database is required by the end of October from the absentee faculty.
• It was good that we had an outside consultant this time, Marty Townsend. We may be able to start doing our own in the future; Marty will help us with this transition. This may be one of the largest groups of trainees and we certified many faculty. In fact, we went over budget with the Dean to pay folks ($50 a half day). Still in process of payment.
• Leonard discussed strategic problems with work laid on the Heritage committee.

• Faculty must be certified to teach a writing intensive class; the committee will kick back the proposal otherwise.
5. Next year: the dates are set for Aug. 28, 29, 30, 2007.
6. Fall schedules come out in Feb. It is recommended that dept. chairs put in the courses identified by faculty.
7. Special acknowledgement to Maria for the instant minutes and FAQ’s.
