• Deadline for schedules for 2007-08 comes up quickly that effects submission for proposals.
• Trial letters to dept. chairs.
• Most classes are eligible: Heritage is already part of the WAC.
• Upload one class at a time.

• Screen size is an issue: make the screen as large as possible.

Letter for attendance at workshop: David
• Going to faculty to verify WI courses: purpose is to read and understand requirements
• The committee edited language of the letter.

Outreach: Rick
1. Modern Language Inquiry: Rick met with Mimi
• Question: did the writing have to be in English?
• Rick answered no: process is important

• Senior thesis is in English: regular requirements
• Calligraphy: Does a calligraphy project have intent in meaning? Are they writing in their language to express meaning? If they are copying letters to learn the art form only, then it doesn’t meet the WAC requirement.
• Ask about calligraphy in their own translation: English text first then written and translated
• Font size brings up issues that we hadn’t considered for meeting criteria.
• Graphic design and Topography: Leonard brings up questions

• Purpose: Jim: it is writing in the English language or writing in the discipline?
• David clarification: requirements of the discipline is the target.
• Mark example: in math, formulas, function, graphs information are included in papers.
• Process and gathering feedback is important: Rick. Instructor to be creative to meet some course objectives
• Confusion of WAC as a philosophy: not just in language but informal writing use: Alan: expressive and analytic.
• Leonard: key is how course is intentionally designed

• Rick to draft response to modern languages and give to Mark before responding to Mimi.
2. Music Dept. Inquiry:
• Asking about using freshman classes 116 and 117 for Majors
• Issues: not committed majors and 2 cr. transfer students
• Music history is a typical course for WI courses in other colleges according to Alan: those would be courses 305, 306, 307. Dimitri teaches these.
• Jim Ripley has objection to big classes in music history being used.

• David reminded us that General education classes are also used so music majors can use the wildcard option for the 4th class.

Michele: calendar and timing
• We have to move quickly to enter these classes maybe by Oct. 31. First part of November dept. chairs will be submit 2006-2007 schedules to Division chairs who will return them by Thanksgiving to the registrar.

Carthage Symposium: we need to coordinate with Tim Eckert

We will approve both sets of minutes in the next meeting, Oct. 24, 10:30am.
